Wellington City Mission supported through ProductRecallNZ by GS1 New Zealand

GS1 New Zealand is extending its support to the Wellington City Mission supermarket by offering free access to ProductRecallNZ, an automated, 24/7, online product withdrawal and recall service.

The Wellington City Mission operates a social supermarket that provides people in need with access to groceries in a dignified, empowering way. Unlike traditional food banks, the social supermarket allows customers to choose their own products at no cost, helping families maintain control over their food choices while ensuring they receive essential supplies.

“It just makes so much sense for them to come and pick their own kai rather than be given a bag of food. It’s a dignified and mana enhancing experience,” says Selena Mills-Wierzbicki, Social Supermarket Team Leader at Wellington City Mission

For Selena, ensuring food safety is critical. GS1 New Zealand’s ProductRecallNZ ensures the team receives product recall and withdrawal alerts enabling them to quickly act on any food safety issues. “That information is really important to us and our shoppers.”

ProductRecallNZ is a digital tool that streamlines the recall and withdrawal process, providing immediate alerts to protect consumers from unsafe products. This system helps retailers and suppliers coordinate responses quickly and effectively, reducing risks and preventing food safety issues from escalating.

GS1 New Zealand worked in partnership with Foodstuffs New Zealand, who are providing the point of sale system needed.

“GS1 New Zealand is proud to provide pro bono ProductRecallNZ to Social Supermarkets across Aotearoa as part of our social responsibility programme, helping them maintain the highest standards of product safety and give peace of mind to those who rely on their services. This is part of our continued commitment to making a positive impact in our community.” says Richard Manaton, Chief Operating Officer at GS1 New Zealand.
