What’s changing in Food and Grocery? Outtakes from the Food and Grocery Council Conference 2024
Resilience and determined optimism were key themes that emerged from the NZ Food and Grocery Council Conference in November. While the sector has faced a challenging period, with inflation now back in band, and the country climbing up out of ‘recession’ there was plenty to celebrate across the board. GS1 New Zealand was pleased to partner with the Food and Grocery Council this year as a member of the Shared Horizons media series.
Building the future with 2D barcodes and GS1 Digital Link
Barcode scanning is hardly new but in its latest form, this technology can revolutionise New Zealand’s building industry. The coming introduction of the 2D (two-dimensional) barcodes such as GS1 QR or GS1 DataMatrix on packs or individual building products will help manage quality, cost, efficiency and sustainability issues that currently plague the industry.
2025 – the big year for digital migration
Digitalisation of processes and transactions is gathering pace across government, especially with October’s announcement that many more agencies must send and receive eInvoices by the start of 2026. Greater use of NZBNs (New Zealand Business Numbers) will obviously facilitate this broad-based shift to eInvoicing – and agencies will soon have a mandate for requiring businesses and other entities to adopt and use NZBNs in their dealings with government.
Welcoming paperless trade to accelerate export opportunities
New Zealand food and fibre producers are moving steadily into the new era of “paperless trade” on global markets – and with this comes huge potential for export earnings growth.
External solution providers highlighted as key partners for GS1 New Zealand ‘Sunrise 2027’ 2D barcode ambition
As New Zealand businesses look to implement changes ahead of the ‘sunrise’ of 2D barcoding in 2027, external solution providers play a pivotal role in making this possible for GS1 members. While GS1 New Zealand encourages the adoption of standards in business practices, it is the community of solution providers working directly with our members who enable real-world implementation in the manufacturing environment.
Raise the Bar 2024: Redefining creativity in barcode design
The Raise the Bar barcode design competition, an annual collaboration between GS1 New Zealand and Whitireia/WelTec, continues to inspire and challenge design students to think outside the box. Students are tasked with designing a product and integrating a creative yet functional barcode that adheres to GS1 standards. The competition aims to bridge the gap between classroom theory and industry standards.
