Streamlining the border clearance process
Exporting your products with GS1 global identifiers
GS1 global standards at the border can support smoother customs clearance through:
- Clear and trusted unique identification of the product and export business.
- Easy exchange of digital product information at the border.
- Full data sets and fewer data errors that can slow down transit of goods.
- Enhanced traceability and supply chain integrity that can help minimise biosecurity and public health risks.
China has perhaps one of the most advanced implementations of GS1 identifiers at the border. The Global Trade Item Number (barcode number) is now requested in declarations with Chinese Customs.

Be prepared - make sure your product data is visible globally
Ensure your product data is available globally to retailers, marketplace platforms and ultimately at borders through “Verified by GS1” global registry and GS1 “Product Passport”.
“Verified by GS1” is a new global registry platform that can hold enriched verified product data that will help border agencies using it to validate product data integrity. The platform now includes more than 240 million products involving 76 countries/regions (representing 96% of global GDP) and has over 14 million product queries every month.
Note: Product data refers to the owner (or licenser) of the product and 7 core product attributes: GTIN, brand name, description, a URL of a product image, its GS1 Global Product Category (GPC) code, the net content and unit of measure, and the country of sale.
Are your products in the global platform?
